India has always been very generous in helping other countries in the need of the hour. It has delivered many accomplishments in the past crisis that everybody marvelled at. Our firm resolve towards aatamnirbharta has led us on the path of glory and prestige.
In another breakthrough, Indian researchers have developed the first of its kind, semi-quantitative Electrochemical ELISA test for COVID-19 IgM and IgG antibodies. The test has been developed by PathShodh Healthcare Pvt Ltd. It is a start-up incubated at the Society for Innovation and Development (SID) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
To get more insights about this unique technology, PBNS had a detailed conversation with IISc Co-founder, Dr Navakanta Bhat Dean, Indian Institute of Science and CEO and Co-Founder of PathShodh Healthcare Pvt Ltd, Dr Vinay Kumar.
Dr Navakanta Bhat Dean, Indian Institute of Science (00:00:41 – 00:01:30)
As It is an extraordinary and one of its kind initiative, Dr Navakanta Bhat apprised that the existing technologies are either based on colour change or the measurement of optical density in a lab setting whereas the Electrochemical ELISA test is a completely new technology. He also informed that this novel technology and product is supported by the Government’s Department of Science and Technology (DST).
Dr Navakanta Bhat Dean, Indian Institute of Science (00:02:29 – 00:03:06)
The Electrochemical ELISA test has been approved by the Indian Council Of Medical Research and has also received the license to manufacture for sale from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO). Further, Dr Vinay Sharma informed about the trajectory of this indigenous development and he also mentioned the timely financial assistance provided by the Department of Science and Technology.

Now, let’s know how this technology helps in supporting the ongoing inoculation drive across the country.

(00:10:18 – 00:11:22)
The test kit comes in two parts. One is the handheld analyser which reads the blood sample and gives a detailed report. The other is a test strip where a drop of blood from one’s fingertip is inserted into the device. Dr Vinay Kumar explains more about it.
(00:11:45 – 00:12:31) + (00:12:53 – 00:13:36)
The interesting aspect of this test is that, apart from predicting the status of COVID-19, It also provides an estimate of antibody concentration in a human body. Dr Navakanta Bhat also ascribes that without the successful intervention of the government, this invention would not have been possible.
(00:15:29 – 00:15:57)
The test is not only useful as a routine sero-survey tool, but more importantly, It also helps in establishing a previous infection.
(00:17:54 – 00:18:45)
Leading PM Modi’s vision of aatamnirbharta, Dr Vinay informed that India is always known for revolutionary inventions in the field of science and there are ample opportunities for researchers to excel in this field.
(00:23:34 – 00:23:47)
Modern India has a strong focus on science and technology. India is one of the top-ranking countries in the field of basic research. Indian Science has come to be regarded as one of the most powerful instruments of growth and development. India has embarked on some major science projects which have relevance to national needs and which will also be relevant for tomorrow’s technology.
We will be back with more stories, thanks for watching…
