Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban
Leading the vision of Housing For All, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban has registered an outstanding success. Under the Scheme, 1.12 crore houses have been sanctioned for the beneficiaries, more than 83 lakh houses have been grounded and more than 50 lakh houses have been completed till date.
To propel the ‘Housing for All’ as a universal theme, the Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs has announced that 75 ‘Awas Par Samvaad’ workshops will be held across States and UTs in schools, colleges and Institutions.
The success of ‘Housing for All’ can be attributed to the fact that Direct Benefit Transfer has been a key element of the Mission. Moreover, the use of Information Technology for real-time monitoring, additional funding through Extra Budgetary Resources and budgetary allocations have been major contributors. As of now, over ₹ 100,000 crores of central assistance has already been released and the infusion of such a large amount of funding has propelled the economy.
In the last 6 years, the government is expanding the security net to the poorest and most vulnerable sections of society. Before the crisis hit humanity, the government had launched Affordable Rental Housing Complexes for the urban/poor migrants. Under Model 1, a total of 2,588 houses have been made operational in Chandigarh and Surat (Gujarat), while under the 2nd Model, proposals for about 80,000 Affordable Rental Housing Complexes units have been proposed have been received from Public/Private entities in 17 States/UTs.
Atal Mission for Rejuvenation & Urban Transformation
AMRUT has a focus on reforms emphasizing e-Governance, energy audit, the credit rating of Urban Local Bodies, efficient town planning, online building permission system and raising funds by floating municipal bonds. Under energy audit, 88 lakh streetlights have been replaced with energy-efficient LED lights.
Different government Schemes have also allowed people to give wings to their dreams. Let’s have a look, how?

Now, let’s get to know about a transformational Mission that has brought a paradigm shift in the practice of urban development across the country.
Smart Cities Mission has mirrored the aspirations of the local population. 70 Smart cities have developed and operationalised their Integrated Command and Control Centres in the country. The Mission has demonstrated notable success in all the projects.
Around 212 public-private partnership projects worth ₹ 24,964 crores have been grounded under the Smart Cities Mission. These projects are located across 57 cities and are spanned across diverse and unique sectors.
Moreover, to promote youth leadership and usher vibrancy in the design of India’s urban future, India Smart Cities Fellowship Program was also initiated by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. Besides, the Urban Learning Internship Program platform has connected the graduates to Urban Local Bodies and Smart Cities to co-create new solutions for our cities.
Besides, a Handbook of Urban Statistics-2020 has also been launched to capture the data related to the nature and cause of disability, the socio-economic condition of Persons with Disabilities and their access to various physical and social infrastructure. It is the first of its kind document with a special focus on Persons with Disabilities.
With the pre-emptive approach, the meaning of development has been extended to clean water, cleanliness, access to electricity, institutionalized loans and formal banking structure. The vision of New India has undone decades of impoverishment and has freed and fulfilled the aspirations of people.
