Raised by the then India’s Governor-General Warren Hastings in September 1773, who personally handpicked 50 troopers as his bodyguards,– in the same year, another 50 troopers took the strength of the unit to 100.
The title of President’s Bodyguard kept on changing with the passage of time: –
In 1773, the regiment was named Governor’s Troops Moghals. Other titles in use were Troops of Body Guard, Governor’s Troops of Bodyguards, Troops of Horse guards, Troops of Black Cavalry, Body Troop.
In 1784 – Governor General’s Bodyguards (GGBG)
In 1859 – Viceroy’s BodyGuards**
In 1944 – 44th Divisional Reconnaissance Squadron (GGBG)
In 1946 – Governor General’s Bodyguard
After independence, the unit got split between Governor General’s BodyGuard, India & Governor General’s Body Guard, Pakistan. And in 1950, it finally became The President’s Bodyguard.
With the primary role of escorting and protecting the President of India, Army’s most elite regiment comprises four officers, along with 14 junior commissioner officers (JCO) and 161 mounted cavalrymen.
The role of the President’s bodyguards is not limited to the security of the President, but they are also the most important part of any parade in the country.
Be it Republic day or the new President’s swear-in ceremony, these tall men riding their elegant horses with 9 feet lances in hand and a sword tight to the waist are always with the President.
But they are not just the handsome riders, they are trained parachute pathfinders, paratroopers and leading airborne assault.
The President’s bodyguards have been a part of independent India’s all major wars, they fought in Indo-pak war in 1965, the regiment also serves in the Siachen Glacier.
The regiment to date has been awarded battle owners like Java , Ava, Maharajpur, Motki, Feroz Shah, Ali and Sobraon.
The horse-mounted Bravehearts are the ceremonial performers in peacetime and in wartime they are skilled combat paratroopers and tankmen.
Today, these elite soldiers are at the center stage, which symbolizes India’s pride, glory, and dignity.
