Most of us have grown up being taught the importance of education. But why is it important? The simple answer would be it helps you to get a job.
But actually, education goes so much beyond just grabbing a job –In fact, it’s one of the most powerful tools out there.
On similar lines, the Union Education Ministry has adopted new and innovative methods to provide hybrid education combining offline and online teaching methods in the Indian school education system amid the COVID -19
On 17th May 2021, the Education Ministry held one of the biggest meetings on school education focussing on coherent efforts made by the states and UTs underscoring the imperativeness of reaching out to the children during the pandemic.
Now lets a look at some of the major initiatives taken by the government for bridging the learning gaps to students across the country
Expansion of DIKSHA under PM eVIDYA ( Graphic Slide)
PM eVidya is a ‘One Nation One Digital’ platform that provides multimode access to digital education to students and teachers, where students can access the courses of over 100 universities through the platform.
The program also consists of ‘DIKSHA’, which is a ‘one nation, one digital platform’ for school education. The platform provides e-content and QR-coded textbooks for all grades which benefit nearly ‘25 crore’ school-going children across the country.

SWAYAM PRABHA is an amalgamation of 34 (Direct-to-home) DTH channels devoted to telecast high-quality educational programmes on 24X7 basis. Every day, the platform generates fresh content for at least (4) hours, allowing the students to choose the time of their convenience.
NISHTHA training for teachers at DIKSHA ( Graphic slide)
Considered as the world’s largest teachers’ training programme ‘NISHTHA’ aims to improve the “quality of School Education by building competencies among all the teachers and school principals at the elementary stage.
The basic objective of this massive training programme is to motivate and equip teachers to encourage and foster critical thinking in students. The initiative is first of its kind wherein standardized training modules are developed at national level for all states and UTs.
Manodarpan for the psycho- social wellness of the students ( Graphic slide)
With an aim to provide psycho – social support and counseling to students ‘Manodarpan’ is a toll-free national helpline number ( 8448440632 – Graphic) along with a website which provides a handbook on 21st-century life skills, for the students of school, college and universities
Further in a significant step towards leveraging technology to digital efficiency, components of Samagra Shiksha, an overarching programme for school education has been built into special and focused interventions in view of the present situation.
The Centrally sponsored scheme envisages universal access, equity and promoting vocationalisation of education and strengthening of teacher education institutions.
The learning enhancement and enriching programme also provides supplementary material to children and library grants for ensuring availability of reading material. The program provides special training for out of school children and students with special needs.
An ad-hoc grant to the tune of Rs 5,228 crore has already been released to the states under Samagra Shiksha and an additional amount of Rs 2,500 crore will be released soon to ensure continuity of various educational initiatives.
Initiatives by India’s Public Service Broadcaster Prasar Bharati to promote online learning
Prasar Bharati operates 51 direct-to-home (DTH) education TV channels comprising 22 channels under Swayam Prabha initiative, e-Vidya for classes 1 to 12 (12 channels) of NCERT, Vande Gujarat (Govt. of Gujarat) (16 channels), and DigiShala under the Ministry of Electronics and IT (1 channel) to all viewers of DD FreeDish.
The digital wing of Prasar Bharati, PBNS & DP runs a youtube channel that provides informative videos on plethora of topics to make easy comprehension for viewers to understand complex topics.
The services are free of cost for all the viewers 24×7 and are in line with the government’s commitment towards skill development and creating a global quality education platform to every student in India.
