Sensex ends 14 points down, Nifty closes at 15,208; IT and Metal in the lead

Indian equity indices ended the volatile session on a mixed note on Tuesday. Buying interest witnessed in metal, IT and auto stocks. Selling pressure witnessed in banking and financial services stocks. Asian paints, Titan Company, Bajaj Finserv, ONGC, and TCS were among the top Sensex gainers, while the HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, Reliance and IndusInd Bank were laggards.
Earlier in Asian Indices, Japan’s Nikkei gained 0.7 per cent, South Korea’s Kospi added 0.9 per cent, and China’s Shanghai Composite rose over 2 per cent.
Market Overview
The BSE Sensex declined 0.03 per cent and the Nifty50 increased 0.07 per cent. The Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange closed at the 50,600 level while Nifty50 of the National Stock Exchange settled at the 15,208 mark. The Sensex declined 14 points to trade at 50,637 and the Nifty50 increased by 10 points to trade at 15,208.
Nifty50 Index
In Nifty50 shares, 38 shares out of 50 companies closed on the green side of the market. Britannia was the top performer and outperformed the entire large-cap market as it gained 103.57 per cent, followed by Asian Paints which rose by 3.38 per cent, Titan Company surged 3.21 per cent, Eicher Motors, JSW Steel and Bajaj Finserv also closed on the green side of the market. On the other hand, 12 stocks out of 50 Nifty50 shares closed on the red side. HDFC Bank declined 2.08 per cent, HDFC Life fell 1.34 per cent. Axis Bank, Reliance, IndusInd Bank also declined and closed on the red side of the market.
Small-cap and Mid-cap Indices
The Nifty Midcap-100 index declined 0.16 per cent and the Nifty Smallcap-100 index fell 0.08 per cent. In Nifty Midcap 100, Indian Hotels gained 4.28 per cent, Balkrishna Industries rose 3.36 per cent, Edelweiss, Max Financial and Oil India also surged, while Union Bank, Amara Raja Batt and PNB Housing Finance declined. In Nifty Smallcap-100, MMTC Ltd gained 11.70 per cent. On the other hand, Century Plyboard fell 5.47 per cent, India Cements, Welspun India, DCM Shriram declined.
Sectoral Indices
In NSE sectoral indices, all 14 out of 17 sectors surged. The Media was the top performer as it gained 3.17 per cent, NSE IT rose 0.96 per cent, followed by Nifty Consumption increased by 0.95 per cent. On the other hand, Nifty PSU Bank, Nifty Pvt bank and Nifty Energy declined.
