National Broadcasting Day: All India Radio came a long way since 1927

In India, “National Broadcasting Day” is celebrated on 23rd July every year to make people aware of the importance of radio. Radio has been an important part of the lives of people in India. On this day in the year 1927, the broadcast of radio started from Bombay station for the first time in the country under a private company called Indian Broadcasting Company of India (IBC).

All India Radio has come a long way

All India Radio with the motto “Bahujan Hitay, Bahujan Sukhay” came a long way. Broadcasting service was started in 1927 with two privately owned transmitters in Mumbai and Kolkata. After that, in 1930, the government took these transmitters under its control. Then it started operating under the name of Indian Broadcasting Service. Till 1935, it was known as Indian Broadcasting Service. But in the year 1936 its name was changed to All India Radio and in 1956 it came to be known as ‘Aakashwani’.

Reaches about 150 countries through medium and short wave services

India’s public service broadcaster, Prasar Bharati is one of the largest broadcasting organizations in the world. Prasar Bharati has 470 broadcasting centers across the country, covering approximately 92% of the country’s area and 99.19% of the total population. All India Radio originally broadcasts programs in 23 languages ​​and 179 dialects. It reaches about 150 countries through medium and short wave services. Prasar Bharati’s NewsonAIR mobile app has more than 1 million subscribers. On this app you can listen to all the radio channels of All India Radio in digital form. Now radio can be enjoyed even by connecting directly to the Internet. In today’s time we have many resources, but even today the craze for radio remains in the hearts of the people.

Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Anurag Thakur tweeted on the occasion and said that effective communication is an enabler and empowers citizens.

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also greeted the people on the occasion of National Broadcasting Day. He tweeted,”On this day in 1927, India’s first-ever radio broadcast went on air from Bombay station. An integral part of our life since then, All India Radio continues to bind the nation together through both entertainment & information.”
