In a nail-biting game, the Indian Women’s Hockey team defeated South Africa by 4-3 in the final Pool A match at Oi Hockey Stadium, Japan, and pumped up the hopes of Indian Hockey fans to see their favorite team in Quarter Finals.
The Indian Women’s Hockey team led by captain Rani Rampal gave a tough fight to their South African counterparts and registered their second win in the Olympic Games. The Indian Women’s Hockey team will play its quarter-final match if Ireland loses/draw the match to be played against Great Britain later in a day.
A historic moment for the Indian Women’s team
Vandana Kataria became the first Indian Woman Hockey Player to score a hat-trick at the Olympics. In Saturday’s clash, Kataria gave India a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute (first quarter) but South Africa’s Tarryn Glasby equalizes the points table merely 30 seconds before the end of the first quarter.
Kataria successfully managed to convert two penalty corners into two goals struck by her ( at 17th minute and 49th minute) which helped India to register a 4-3 victory against South Africa. Neha Goyal at the 32nd minute scored the other goal for India.
Tarryn Glasby (at 15th minute), skipper Erin Hunter (at 30th minute), and Marizen Marais (at 39th minute) scored goals for South Africa.
With today’s win, India finished the group stages with six points from a total of five games played (two wins and three losses). The Rani Rampal-led hockey team registered their first win on July 30 after defeating Ireland 1-0.
On the other hand, the Indian Men’s Hockey team on Friday defeated Japan 5-3 in the final Group A match and entered Quarter Finals. Manpreet Singh led the Indian team to go against Great Britain in their quarter-final match on August 1.
