Indian athletes have displayed immense grit and dedication in the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Through their unparalleled efforts, the nation has obtained a total of 7 medals which include 1 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze medals.
India’s Olympic Champions
Neeraj Chopra
The 23-year-old Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra created history by winning the Gold medal in men’s javelin throw at Tokyo Olympic 2020. Chopra gave his best throw of 87.58 to bag the gold medal. With this victory, he has become the first Indian athlete to win gold ever and India’s second-ever individual Olympic gold medalist. Neeraj Chopra is also a Naib Subedar with 4 Rajputana Rifles in the Indian Army. Neeraj was selected in the Indian Army as a junior commissioned officer (JCO) in 2017.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya
Indian athlete Ravi Kumar Dahiya made the nation proud as the wrestler bagged a Silver Medal in the men’s freestyle 57 kg category in Tokyo Olympics 2020. The 23-year-old became the second male wrestler to win a silver for India in wrestling.
Ravi Kumar Dahiya hails from the Nahri village in the Sonipat district of Haryana and started Wrestling at the age of 10. He comes from an agrarian family background and his father used to work in the paddy fields in his village.
Mirabai Chanu
Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 49 Kg weightlifting event. She had total lifts of 202kg, including 87kg in Snatch and 115kg in Clean & Jerk. The 26-year-old from Manipur nurtured carefully after a back injury in 2018, became the toast of the nation. Mira started her training at the SAI centre in Imphal near her hometown. She was inducted into the Target Olympic Podium Scheme in 2017.
P V Sindhu
Indian shuttler P V Sindhu won the bronze medal in the women’s single match. PV Sindhu defeated He Bing Jiao of China by 21-13 and 21-15 in the bronze medal match and became the first Indian woman to win two Olympic medals. She started playing badminton at the age of 8 under the guidance of Mehboob Ali. She travelled a distance of 56 km every day from her residence to the badminton courts to learn and practice the sport.
Lovlina Borgohain
Boxer Lovlina Borgohain has bagged a Bronze Medal in the 69-kilogram category. Lovlina hails from the Golaghat district of Assam. In her journey to reach the pinnacle, she battled the society who used to question her interest in Boxing being a female. But this did not jitter her aspirations leading to her first breakthrough; a Bronze at the World Championship in 2018. After Qualifying for Tokyo Olympics 2020, she became the first Woman in the History of Assam to qualify for the Olympics.
Indian Hockey Team
In a historical win, the Indian men’s hockey team won the bronze medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020. It is the first Olympic medal win of the Indian men’s hockey team in the last 41 years which they secured with a 5-4 win over Germany in an interesting bronze medal match.
Bajrang Punia
Wrestler Bajrang Punia won the bronze medal in the men’s freestyle 65 Kg category at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. He defeated Kazakhstan’s Daulet Niyazbekov by 8-0 in the bronze medal match. BajrangPunia started wrestling at the age of 7. He belongs to a family of a rural background in Khudan village of Jhajjar district in the state of Haryana.
