On 19th May 2021, PM Modi chaired a high level meeting and talked about the issue of fertiliser prices. Post meeting, centre announced that Indian farmers will now be getting a hike in subsidy of DAP fertilizer.
DAP or Diammonium phosphate is considered to be the best fertilizer for providing full phosphorus nutrition throughout crop growth and development. It helps in improving the quality of wheat, sugar beet, grain corn, oats, barley, potato and soybeans.
Historic decision : 140% hike in subsidy
For the first time, the subsidy on DAP fertilizer has been hiked by 140%. Earlier the government was bearing a subsidy of Rs. 500 per bag which has now been raised to Rs. 1200 per bag. In 2020, the price of DAP was 1700 per bag and the central government was bearing a subsidy of 500 rupees
Reason of price hike
DAP consists of phosphoric acid, ammonia and other things. Recently the international price of the constituents of DAP has gone up by 60% to 70% and because of this, the actual price of DAP bags has reached 2400 rupees. Earlier the government was bearing 5oo per bag but now because of the central government’s pro farmer decision, farmers will continue to get the bag at 1200 rupees.
Government’s expense on fertilizers
Annually the central government spends about 80,000 crore rupees in subsidies for chemical fertilizers. The numbers have gone up with this decision and from now the government’s annual expenditure on the chemical subsidy has been raised by 14,775 crore.
The subsidy which we talked about is definitely the first of its kind but the central government has always been working towards the benefit of farmers in one way or the other.
Other decisions of Farmers interest
Recently on the occasion of Akshaya Tritiya, the central government released the 8th installment of PM Kisan. West Bengal got the benefit of the scheme for the first time. PM KISAN or Prime Minister Kisan Samman Nidhi Scheme aims to provide financial support to the landholder farmer families across India with cultivable land.
Be it by extending the Kisan Credit Card deadline or by promoting organic farming, the central government is working day & night to ease the pain of farmers. That’s all for today. Thanks for watching, take care.
