India’s Lovlina Borgohain on Tuesday advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Welterweight division after defeating Germany’s Nadine Apetz by a 3:2 split win.
The Olympic Debutant Lovlina Borgohain kept her German counterpart Apetz beleaguered during the third (the final round) thereby confirming her position at the Quarter Finals. The results of the first two rounds also showed Borgohain leading the points table. Borgohain won the welterweight bout by a 3:2 split decision.
Lovlina’s counterattacks tactics helped her to surpass her German senior on the points table during the results of the first round. In the first round, three judges gave full points to India as against the two remaining judges giving full points to Germany. Second-round results were the same.
In the third round, the two-time world championship bronze medallist, Lovlina Borgohain managed to keep her German opponent at backfoot, and emerged victorious in her debut Olympic match.
Lovlina to now go against Chinese Taipei’s Nien-Chin in the women’s 69kg quarter-final on Friday. The victory in the quarter-finals will also assure a medal for 23-year-old Assam’s Borgohain as the semi-finalists are assured of at least a bronze at the Games.
