The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi was apprised of the MoU signed between the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India and Ministry of National Planning, Housing and Infrastructure, Government of Maldives on cooperation in the field of Sustainable Urban Development.
The Cabinet also approved the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) on Sustainable Urban Development between India’s MoHUA and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, Government of Japan, in supersession of the existing MoU of 2007 on Urban Development.
A Joint Working Group (JWG) will soon be constituted to strategize and implement programmes on cooperation under the framework of both the MoC and MoU. JWG will meet once a year, alternately for both countries.
The MoU between India and Maldives came into effect soon after two contracting parties signed on 20th February 2021 and will remain in force for an indefinite period.
The cooperation under the India and Japan MoC will commence on the date of its signature and continue for a period of 5 years. Thereafter, it may be renewed automatically for further successive periods of 5 years at a time.
Major impact MoU between India and Maldives:
The MoU will promote strong, deep and long-term bilateral cooperation in the field of Sustainable Urban Development between the two countries.
The MoU is expected to create employment along with facilitating and strengthening India-Maldives technical cooperation in the field of Sustainable Urban Development.
It includes Urban Planning, Smart Cities Development, Solid waste management, Affordable housing, Urban Green Mobility, Urban Mass Rapid Transport, smart cities development and any other related area mutually agreed by both India and Maldives.
Major Impact of MoC between India and Japan:
The MoC will promote strong, deep and long-term bilateral cooperation in the field of Sustainable Urban Development between the two countries.
The MoC is expected to create employment opportunities and facilitate and strengthen India-Japan technical cooperation in the field of Sustainable Urban Development.
It includes Urban Planning, Smart Cities Development, Affordable Housing (including rental housing), Urban Flood Management, Sewerage and Waste Water Management, Intelligent Transport Management System, Transit-Oriented Development, Multimodal Integration, Disaster Resilient development and other areas as mutually identified by both sides.
The proposed MoC will enable an exchange of key learnings and best practices in the above-mentioned areas.
