To facilitate a better learning process for students, various timely interventions have been implemented by the government.
The learning opportunity for students has been enhanced with a slew of government reforms but nowadays, some educational institutions take advantage of the learning process and serve the students with fake/illegal degrees, thereby leading to a waste of time and money. This fraud could not only hamper the growth of an individual but could also destroy the precious years of gaining knowledge.
To protect the nation’s youth from such illegitimate activities, the Union Education Minister informed that University Grants Commission (UGC) has declared 24 self-styled institutes as fake universities. The decision has been announced on the basis of complaints received from the students, parents, general public, and also through electronic and print media.
These fake universities were running in different parts of the country. For better understanding, let’s go through the details of these fake varsities.

Besides, 2 more institutes named Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow, UP, and the Indian Institute of Planning and Management (IIPM), Qutub Enclave, New Delhi are also found functioning in violation of the UGC Act, 1956. The matters of Bhartiya Shiksha Parishad, Lucknow, and IIPM, New Delhi are sub-judice in the Court.
It is worth noting that (UGC) University Grants Commission Act mandates that a degree can be awarded only by a university that is established under a Central, State/Provincial Act or an institution deemed to be a university under Section 3 of the UGC Act or an institution empowered by the act of the Parliament to confer a degree. Apart from this definition, UGC has prohibited the use of the word ‘University’ by any other such institution.
Moreover, UGC has also mentioned that certain steps are taken against these fake/non-recognized universities, from time to time: Let’s get to know about them.
UGC issues Public Notices about the list of fake universities/institutes in National Hindi and English Newspapers. It also writes letters to State Chief Secretaries, Education Secretaries, and Principal Secretaries to take action against fake universities/institutes located in their jurisdiction.
Further, Show Cause Notices/Warning Notices are also issued to the unauthorized institutes awarding invalid degrees when any self-styled institution is found/noticed functioning in violation of the UGC Act, 1956.
Education is the most powerful medium to transform one’s life, therefore, Universities should become thought leaders in finding solutions to the challenges posed in front of the students, thus, preparing responsible future generations.
