In a big boost towards realising the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission, the government of India has approved the allotment of 4G spectrum to Indian Railways to ensure safe, secure, and faster train operations.
Keeping in mind the safety of the public as well as security services at stations and in trains, the project that is said to be completed in 5 years will likely incur an estimated investment of more than Rs. 25,000 Crore.
With this spectrum, Railways intends to provide LTE or Long Term Evolution based Mobile Train Radio Communication on its route.
Why is Indian Railways bringing these reforms?
This whole project is targeted to bring a strategic shift in Railways’ operations and maintenance regime.
Railways has approved TCAS or Train Collision Avoidance System, an indigenously developed Automatic Train Protection System. This system will help in avoiding train collisions thereby reducing accidents and ensuring passenger safety.
An advanced maintenance regime will help in improving the safety and increasing the line capacity to accommodate more trains while still using the existing infrastructure.
Moreover, the modern rail network will result in reduced transportation cost and higher efficiency.
It will also attract multinational industries to set up manufacturing units that would eventually fulfil the ‘Make in India’ mission and generate more employment.

The purpose of the Long Term Evolution based Mobile Train Radio Communication is to provide secure and reliable voice, video and data communication services for operational, safety and security applications.
The system will be used for modern signalling and train protection systems to ensure seamless communication between loco pilots and guards.
It will also enable the Internet of Things or IoT based remote asset monitoring especially of coaches, wagons & locos, including the live video feed of CCTV cameras in the train coaches that will ensure efficient, safer and faster train operations.
How will the general public be benefitted from the implementation of these reforms?
Well, the feature of this new system directly aims to make the travel of commoners – safer and faster.
With an advanced LTE system, there will be a reduction in instances of train collisions which in turn would reduce accidents thereby ensuring passenger safety at all times.
In addition to safety, this modern rail network will result in reduced transportation cost and higher efficiency.
This project will give a big boost to ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ mission by developing an Aatmanirbhar Rail network that is built an idea of modernised Railway signalling and telecommunications.
